The 3 Main Differences Between Braces and Invisalign®

Jan 01, 2022

Misaligned teeth might give you a cute and quirky smile, but along with that you may also have problems with tooth wear, tooth decay, and pain stemming from inflammation of your jaw joint. Ideally, your upper and lower teeth work together in a balanced and efficient way.

Braces were the primary treatment option for alignment issues for many years, and they’re still a valid approach that address the widest range of bite alignment conditions. In 1998, though, Invisalign® was introduced to the world, providing an alternative treatment option that’s both discrete and removable.

Brooklyn Dental Spa is a certified Invisalign provider, able to assess your bite alignment and fit you with this innovative series of progressive alignment trays. If you’re still deciding between Invisalign and braces, here are three differences that make Invisalign the clear choice.

1. Your appearance is important

The metallic appearance of conventional braces is hard to miss. It’s not a problem for everyone, but when you’re sensitive to it, the look of braces can undermine your esteem and confidence. While there have been advances that minimize the amount of metal elements, wires and elastics are still essential to the system and still visible to others.

Invisalign aligner trays are made from a special thermoplastic that’s custom-made for you and completely clear. They’re virtually undetectable when you’re wearing them, but if you’re ever in a situation when you don’t want someone to know you’re aligning your teeth, you can simply remove your trays. It’s that simple. While you should wear your trays a recommended 20 to 22 hours daily for fastest results, you can usually fit those special circumstances into that window.

2. Oral hygiene considerations

Conventional braces work by cementing bands onto your teeth. These bands support brackets around which wires are fastened and tightened, creating the pressure necessary to move teeth to their best locations. While the system works well, it creates many nooks and crannies into which food debris can be trapped. The wires used with conventional braces makes flossing difficult and ineffective.

Since the Invisalign system is designed around removable trays, your dental care routine isn’t affected by your alignment treatment. Remove your tray prior to eating, and replace it once you’ve brushed and flossed. It’s important to keep your teeth clean, since aligner trays will hold food particles against your teeth once in place, but Invisalign won’t interfere with your cleaning technique.

3. Speed of treatment

The length of any bite correction treatment depends on your bite conditions at the start of treatment. Some research shows Invisalign can produce results faster than conventional braces, particularly for mild-to-moderate bite correction, as long as you’re wearing your aligners as advised.

You’ll see less time in a dental chair with Invisalign. Since the system uses a progressive sequence of aligner trays to move your teeth, you’ll simply move to the next tray about every two weeks. With braces, you’d need an appointment to adjust the tension on your bands. While you’re still monitored through your treatment, there are fewer sessions than with braces.
