Dental Bridges

If you lose a permanent tooth, a dental bridge can restore your smile and make it easier to eat. At Brooklyn Dental Spa, in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, Sofiya Shimonova, AGNP, and Nancy Aft, DDS, regularly use dental bridges to restore lost or extracted teeth. What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a custom restoration that fills a gap in your smile caused by one (or several) missing teeth.

Dental bridges make it easier to perform daily tasks like biting and chewing, and they restore structure to your jaw.

What are the different types of dental bridges?

Brooklyn Dental Spa offers several types of dental bridges, including:

Traditional bridge

A traditional bridge has a false tooth and two dental crowns. Your provider attaches the crowns to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your smile, and they support the false tooth.

Maryland bridge

Your provider might recommend a Maryland bridge if you’re missing one (or both) front teeth. To hold a Maryland bridge in place, your provider bonds a metal framework to the back of the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your smile.

Cantilever bridges

If you’re missing a front tooth and only have one suitable adjacent tooth, you might benefit from a cantilever bridge. One crown holds a cantilever bridge in place.

Implant-supported bridges

Implant-supported bridges connect to dental implants. Dental implants are metal posts that integrate with your natural bone. Of all the bridge types, implant-supported are the toughest and longest-lasting.

What does getting dental bridges involve?

At Brooklyn Dental Spa, getting a traditional, Maryland, or cantilever bridge takes at least two appointments. If you get an implant-supported bridge, it takes three.

First dental bridge visit

At the first appointment, your provider conducts an exam, asks about your goals, and takes oral X-rays. They use this information to determine the type of bridge that benefits you most.

If you’re a candidate for a traditional, Maryland, or cantilever bridge, your provider takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental laboratory.

If you’re a candidate for an implant-supported bridge, they administer a local anesthetic and insert one (or several) metal posts into your jaw.

Second dental bridge visit

When the lab completes your traditional, Maryland, or cantilever bridge, you return to Brooklyn Dental Spa. Your provider administers a local anesthetic, lines up the bridge with your existing teeth, and bonds it in place. Lastly, Brooklyn Dental Spa provides care instructions.

If you elect to get an implant-supported bridge, you return to Brooklyn Dental Spa when the implants finish integrating with your jaw. Then, your provider takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a laboratory that creates your custom implant bridge.

When the lab finishes the bridge, you return to the office, and your Brooklyn Dental Spa provider attaches it to your implant.
